Making Your Lineart Transparent

Onezumi Studios Tutorial 5 © 2004

This will show you how to make your lineart transparent and suitable for coloring. I rarely use this method because I usually digitally ink my work, but some of you may prefer this method. If you use the digital inking method there is no need to read this tutorial.

Make sure your image is set to Greyscale. Image > Mode > Greyscale

Go to the Channels Palette (Right behind the Layers Palette) and select the channel as shown below.

Go to Select > Inverse

Go back to Layers Palette and create a new layer. Ctrl+Shift+N [Shift+Command+N on the Mac]

Hit Alt-Backspace to fill the selection on the new layer and your lineart will transfer over onto the layer you have selected. Deselect the lineart. Ctrl+D [Command+D on the Mac]

Now you can delete your original sketch. I would duplicate the transparent lineart and lock the top one so that you don't mess it up. Keep the second one beneath it to color on. Finally, add a background layer below it all.

Continue on to the Coloring: Basic Flat Colors tutorial.
